Know Before You Go

There is no dress code to attend a Kingston Symphony concert. Many of our concert patrons dress in business or business casual clothing. You should dress in whatever clothing makes you comfortable so that you can enjoy the music.

The lobby doors will open one hour before the scheduled performance time, and the doors to the theatre doors will open 30 minutes before the concert starts. We suggest you give yourself plenty of time to find parking, pick up your tickets, check your coat if desired, and read through the concert program.

We do ask that you make every effort to arrive on time for a performance. However if you do arrive late, you may be asked by the ushers to wait in the lobby until a suitable break, at which time you may be seated in temporary seats at the back of the hall. You will be able to move to your assigned seat at intermission.

Kingston Symphony concerts tend to last around two hours including intermission. This estimate is dependent on the repertoire being performed and whether or not there is a spoken introduction about the program.

Classical music works typically have three to four movements. Most movements are separated by a short pause. Traditionally there is no applause between movements in order to avoid disrupting the continuity of the music. You can learn how many movements a piece has by viewing the program page in your program book. Each work title is then subtitled with movement titles (usually indicated by tempo markings). After the final movement of a piece, the conductor will turn around to face the audience, cueing the appropriate time for applause.

Proper etiquette for a live performance is simply an act of thoughtful consideration for those around you. Below are some examples:

• Unwrap candies/cough drops before the concert begins;
• Turn off all cell phones, pagers, watches, etc. which could make noise during a performance;
• Use moderation with your use of perfume/cologne as many people are sensitive or allergic to scents.

We welcome children who are old enough to enjoy concert performances. We suggest, however, that some concerts may not be enjoyable for younger children and many not suitable for most children under the age of 5. Please ask about the suitability of the performance prior to purchasing a ticket for a child. A child must be able to sit quietly and not disrupt the performance or other patrons. Children who are unable to sit quietly - and the adult(s) accompanying them - may be asked to leave the hall without refund of the ticket purchase. Please note also that all patrons, including children, must have a ticket to enter the hall and that children must be seated beside an accompanying adult.

There is no photography/videography permitted inside the concert hall before, during or after a performance. It is best that this equipment is left at home.

If you are unable to attend a concert, you may exchange your ticket for another Kingston Symphony concert or return your ticket for resale and receive a tax receipt for the value of the ticket. Exchanges can only be made for tickets to another concert within the same season and are subject to availability. All exchanges and returns must be made at least 24 hours prior to the performance.
